Waking With Neck Pain
Waking With Neck Pain

If you've ever woken up and felt like you slept wrong, you're not alone. Neck pain is one of the most common complaints people have when they wake up in the morning.

Many people assume they pulled a muscle, slept in an awkward position, or are simply getting older. While those things can contribute, your pillow and mattress may not be keeping your spine aligned while you sleep.

Your Neck Is Part of Your Spine

Your neck is simply the upper part of your spine. When your mattress and pillow work together properly, your spine should remain in a neutral position throughout the night.

The Pillow Is Often the Real Culprit

If a pillow is too thick, it pushes your head upward. If a pillow is too thin, your head drops downward. The goal is simple: your head should remain level with the rest of your spine.

Side Sleepers Need More Pillow Support

Side sleepers have the width of their shoulder between their head and the mattress. That gap needs to be filled properly. People with broader shoulders typically need a thicker pillow.

My Johnny Bravo Story

My daughter used to call me Johnny Bravo because I've always been built wider through the shoulders and narrower through the hips. I developed shoulder pain that lasted for months and eventually discovered my mattress was too firm. Once I switched to a mattress that allowed my shoulders to sink in properly while keeping my spine aligned, the pain gradually disappeared.

Can a Mattress Cause Neck Pain?

Absolutely. If a mattress is too firm, your shoulders may not sink in enough. If it's too soft, your body may sink too deeply. Either situation can place stress on the muscles and joints of the neck.

What About Stomach Sleeping?

Stomach sleepers often experience neck pain because the head must remain turned to one side for hours while sleeping.

The Bottom Line

If you're waking up with neck pain every morning, your pillow height, sleeping position, or mattress support may be contributing to the problem. Keep your spine aligned from your neck all the way down to your lower back.
