Mattress Sizes and Dimensions: A Complete Guide
Choosing the right mattress size is just as important as choosing the right firmness or material. Too small and you will feel cramped; too large and the mattress will overwhelm your bedroom and make it difficult to walk around the bed. Here is a breakdown of every standard US mattress size and who each one is best suited for.
Twin (38" x 75")
A standard Twin is the smallest adult mattress size and is ideal for children, bunk beds, and very small rooms. At 38 inches wide, it is too narrow for most adults to sleep comfortably unless they are a compact solo sleeper. It is the most affordable size and the easiest to move.
Twin XL (38" x 80")
The Twin XL adds five inches of length over the standard Twin, making it the standard mattress for college dormitories and the best choice for tall teenagers or adults in small spaces. It has the same width as a Twin but accommodates sleepers up to about 6 feet 4 inches.
Full / Double (54" x 75")
A Full size mattress offers a significant width upgrade over a Twin, giving a solo sleeper 16 more inches of personal space. It is perfect for single adults who like to spread out, or for guest rooms. However, at 54 inches wide, it is generally too narrow for two adults to share comfortably — each person would have only 27 inches of space, less than a standard crib.
Queen (60" x 80")
The Queen is the most popular mattress size in the United States, and for good reason. It offers enough space for two adults to sleep comfortably while fitting well into most standard bedrooms. A Queen requires a minimum room size of about 10 feet by 10 feet to allow adequate walking space around the bed.
King (76" x 80")
A standard King is the equivalent of two Twin XL beds pushed together, offering 76 inches of width — 16 more than a Queen. It is the best choice for couples who want maximum personal space, those who share the bed with children or pets, or anyone who simply prefers to sleep in a very large bed. A King requires a minimum room size of about 12 feet by 12 feet.
California King (72" x 84")
Many People falsely assume a California King is larger than a King Size Mattress. The California King is slightly narrower than a standard King (72 inches vs 76 inches) but four inches longer (84 inches vs 80 inches). It is the best choice for very tall sleepers — anyone over 6 feet 3 inches — who find their feet hanging off the end of a standard King. Note that California King bedding is not interchangeable with standard King bedding. It is also much more difficult to find a bed frame because there aren't nearly as many choices, and it is much less common for people to purchase a California King.
When choosing a mattress size, always measure your bedroom first and leave at least 24 inches of walking space on each side of the bed and at the foot. A mattress that is too large for the room will make the space feel cramped and difficult to navigate.
