Mattress Foundations Explained: What Should You Put Under Your Mattress?

One of the most frequently asked questions from customers is: “Do I still need a box spring?” The answer often surprises them. Modern mattresses generally do not require a traditional box spring. In fact, what many refer to as a “box spring” today is not a true box spring.
What Happened to Real Box Springs?
In the past, box springs contained actual metal springs and were designed to complement older innerspring mattresses by absorbing shock and providing support. Today's versions are typically just foundations—a rigid platform made of wood or metal that offers a flat, supportive surface for your mattress.
Metal Foundations
A popular option today is the metal foundation, which consists of a sturdy metal frame covered with fabric. Its purpose is straightforward: to provide flat, even support, raise the mattress to a comfortable height, improve airflow beneath the mattress, and prevent sagging.
Platform Beds and Slat Systems
Many modern bed frames eliminate the need for a separate foundation. Platform beds often come with a headboard, footboard, side rails, and slat kits. The slats should be closely spaced to offer continuous support across the mattress. Wide gaps can cause the mattress to sag and may void some mattress warranties.
Storage Beds with Drawers
Storage beds are increasingly popular for maximizing bedroom space. Since they already provide a sturdy surface beneath the mattress, an additional foundation is usually unnecessary.
Pedestal Bases
Pedestal bases feature a central support structure with adjustable legs, allowing you to raise or lower the bed height. They provide robust support and excellent under-bed storage. Many also fold in half, making it easier to move.
Adjustable Bases
Adjustable bases enable you to elevate your head, feet, or both. Many models also feature massage functions, USB charging ports, under-bed lighting, and preset comfort positions. Most are designed to fit within standard bed frames, provided the frame does not have storage drawers or other structures that interfere with the moving components.
Which Foundation Is Best?
Metal Foundation: Offers traditional setup, added height, and reliable support.
Platform Bed: Provides modern style and simplicity.
Storage Bed: Maximizes bedroom storage.
Pedestal Base: Features adjustable height and open storage space.
Adjustable Base: Enhances comfort, relieves back pain, and is ideal for reading, gaming, and TV viewing.
Advice for Customers
As a mattress educator, I often remind customers that a mattress is only as good as the support it rests on. A high-quality mattress placed on an inadequate foundation may sag, wear out prematurely, or fail to provide proper spinal support. Whether you choose a platform bed, pedestal base, metal foundation, or adjustable base, the objective remains the same: to provide a flat, supportive surface that allows your mattress to perform optimally.
