WinkBed vs. Purple: A Crash Course in Two Very Different Feels

WinkBed and Purple solve the same problem in very different ways. WinkBed uses a familiar Euro-top hybrid design with strong support and unusually stable edges. Purple uses its distinctive GelFlex Grid to create a buoyant, instantly responsive feel that does not behave like conventional memory foam.

Quick answer: I would choose WinkBed for shoppers who want traditional mattress comfort, dependable support, four firmness choices, and strong overall value. I would choose Purple for sleepers who specifically enjoy the flexible grid feel, want easy pressure relief without a slow foam hug, or place a high priority on airflow.

This comparison combines my showroom testing with current manufacturer information. Where I did not run a controlled test, I say so rather than turning a product claim into a personal finding.

WinkBed vs. Purple at a Glance

Overall feel

WinkBed feels more traditional: a cushioned Euro-top over a supportive coil system. Purple feels more unusual and buoyant because the GelFlex Grid flexes directly under pressure while remaining supportive around it.

Pressure relief

Purple has the more distinctive pressure-relief system. Its grid can collapse under the shoulders and hips without creating the slow, deeply conforming sensation of memory foam. WinkBed's softer configurations provide good cushioning, but the feel remains recognizably that of a premium hybrid.

Support and edge stability

WinkBed has the clearer advantage for shoppers who want a sturdy perimeter and a planted, conventional support feel. During my showroom testing, edge support was one of its strongest traits.

Cooling and airflow

Purple has the stronger construction-based cooling argument because air can move through the open grid. That is not the same as a controlled temperature-test result, and I did not run a laboratory cooling comparison between these two mattresses.

Best reason to choose each

Choose WinkBed for traditional comfort, multiple firmness choices, supportive edges, and value. Choose Purple for its unique responsive grid, pressure relief, and open-air design.

What I Actually Felt in the Showroom

I tested the WinkBed Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer models in a Houston-area showroom. I did not test the Plus, EcoCloud, or GravityLux, so those products are not included in my firsthand scoring.

On my Real Firmness scale, the Softer measured 3.8 out of 10, the Luxury Firm measured 5.0, and the Firmer measured 5.5. That spacing matters: the names sound farther apart than the mattresses felt. The Firmer was supportive, but it did not feel like an unforgiving extra-firm bed.

My showroom scores for the three WinkBed versions were 8, 7, and 7 for pressure relief; 7, 8, and 9 for support; and 9 for edge support. I gave durability a provisional 8 because a short showroom session cannot prove years of performance. At the price I observed, WinkBed earned a 9.0 value assessment.

I have also tested a Purple Restore Soft, which measured 4.8 out of 10 on my Real Firmness scale. Its defining quality was not simply softness. It was the grid's immediate, buoyant response: pressure relief without the delayed recovery or deep sink many people associate with memory foam.

I did not perform a controlled side-by-side motion-isolation or temperature test between these exact mattresses. Any cooling discussion below is based on construction, airflow, and clearly identified manufacturer information—not a claim that I measured a temperature difference.

Construction: Familiar Hybrid vs. Flexible Grid

The WinkBed is built around a Euro-top comfort package and a pocketed-coil support system. The result is familiar even if you have never tried the brand: cushioning on top, spring support underneath, and a reinforced perimeter that makes the usable sleep surface feel broad.

Purple's lineup varies by model. Its defining component is the GelFlex Grid. In the Restore hybrid collection, Purple combines the grid with coils; the amount of grid material and the coil design vary by model. Purple describes the grid as instantly adapting and uses its open structure as a central cooling feature.

The construction difference is the main reason not to choose from specifications alone. Most people understand the feel of a Euro-top hybrid immediately. Purple's grid is more polarizing: some sleepers love its floating, flexible sensation, while others never quite settle into it.

Firmness and Sleeping Position

WinkBed gives shoppers a more straightforward firmness path. The Softer is the logical starting point for side sleepers who want more shoulder and hip cushioning. Luxury Firm is the broadest middle-ground choice. Firmer provides more resistance for back and stomach sleepers, while Plus is designed for heavier bodies but was not part of my test.

Purple firmness depends heavily on the specific collection and model. Even when two mattresses receive similar numbers on a firmness scale, the grid can make Purple feel different because it bends locally instead of compressing like ordinary foam.

For side sleepers, the better choice is not automatically the softer number. Purple may relieve pressure more distinctly at the shoulder and hip, while WinkBed may feel more stable and familiar through the torso. Your response to the grid is the deciding factor.

Pressure Relief

Purple wins the innovation contest here. The grid is designed to remain supportive until enough pressure causes it to flex, creating targeted give beneath prominent areas of the body. That can be especially appealing to sleepers who need cushioning but dislike a slow memory-foam embrace.

WinkBed takes the conventional route. Its pressure relief comes from the Euro-top and comfort layers working above the coils. The Softer version produced the best pressure-relief score in my WinkBed showroom session, but Luxury Firm may offer a better balance for people who need both cushioning and stronger midsection support.

Support and Edge Stability

WinkBed was the stronger and more predictable performer at the edge in my testing. That matters for couples who need the full mattress surface, people who sit on the edge while dressing, and sleepers who dislike a perimeter that folds away beneath them.

Purple's central support can be excellent, particularly in its hybrid models, but the sensation is different. The grid responds point by point, which can feel less planted to someone accustomed to a taut Euro-top. This is a feel preference, not an automatic defect.

Motion, Cooling, and Ease of Movement

Neither design should feel like slow, trapping memory foam. WinkBed's coils and responsive comfort layers make position changes easy. Purple's grid also rebounds immediately, so it feels active rather than sluggish.

For motion isolation, the specific Purple model and the chosen WinkBed firmness can change the result. I did not verify this category with instruments in a controlled head-to-head test, so I would not declare a universal winner.

Purple has the likely airflow advantage on construction alone. Its open grid creates visible channels for air movement. WinkBed uses breathable materials and coils, but I did not measure the surface temperatures of these two mattresses under identical conditions.

Price, Trial, Warranty, and Value

Prices and promotions change frequently, so compare the live total for the exact size and model you are considering. WinkBed generally presents the simpler value story: a premium hybrid, four firmness choices, and strong edge support without requiring a move into the higher tiers of Purple's hybrid lineup.

WinkBeds currently advertises a 120-night trial and a lifetime limited warranty. Its return policy asks customers to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before initiating a return. Purple currently advertises a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. Always recheck the terms at purchase because policies can change.

My value preference is WinkBed, especially near the price I observed during testing. Purple can still be the better personal purchase when the grid solves a comfort or pressure problem that conventional hybrids have not solved for you.

Who Should Choose WinkBed?

  • You want a premium mattress that still feels recognizably traditional.

  • Strong edge support and a stable sitting surface matter to you.

  • You want clearly separated firmness choices rather than one unusual universal feel.

  • You change positions often and want responsive cushioning without deep sink.

  • You are comparing overall support and value more than novelty.

Who Should Choose Purple?

  • You already know you enjoy Purple's buoyant GelFlex Grid sensation.

  • You want pressure relief without the slow response of memory foam.

  • Airflow is a high priority and the open-grid construction appeals to you.

  • You dislike a quilted Euro-top and prefer an instantly adaptive surface.

  • Conventional hybrids have not relieved pressure in the way you need.

The Verdict

WinkBed is my overall recommendation for the larger group of shoppers. It offers a familiar premium-hybrid feel, strong support, excellent edge stability in my testing, useful firmness choices, and a compelling value proposition.

Purple is the more specialized choice—and that is not a criticism. Its grid creates a feel no conventional Euro-top truly duplicates. If that buoyant response relieves your pressure points and keeps you comfortable, Purple may be worth paying more for. If you are unsure about the grid, try it before allowing specifications or marketing language to make the decision for you.

My bottom line: choose WinkBed when you want dependable traditional support and value. Choose Purple when the Purple feel itself is the feature you are buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WinkBed better than Purple?

WinkBed is the better all-around choice for shoppers who want a conventional premium hybrid, firm edges, multiple firmness options, and strong value. Purple is better for sleepers who specifically prefer its flexible grid and buoyant pressure relief.

Which mattress is softer?

That depends on the models compared. WinkBed Softer measured 3.8 out of 10 in my testing, while the Purple Restore Soft measured 4.8. Those numbers do not capture the full difference because Purple's grid flexes very differently from a Euro-top.

Which is better for side sleepers?

WinkBed Softer is the safer traditional choice. Purple may be better for a side sleeper who likes the grid's targeted collapse beneath the shoulder and hip. The best answer depends on whether you enjoy Purple's distinctive feel.

Which mattress sleeps cooler?

Purple has the stronger airflow design because of the open GelFlex Grid. I did not conduct a controlled temperature comparison, so this is a construction-based assessment rather than a measured head-to-head result.

Which mattress is the better value?

WinkBed is my value winner for most shoppers. Purple may justify its cost when its unique pressure relief or feel solves a problem that more traditional mattresses have not.
