Aireloom vs. Purple: Upholstered Cushioning or the Feel of the Grid?

Quick verdict: decide whether you like the Grid first

Aireloom and Purple can both appeal to someone who wants cushioning without the slow, enveloping sensation of dense memory foam. They get there differently, and that difference should lead the shopping decision.

I would put Aireloom on your shortlist when you want substantial upholstered comfort with a lifted, cushion-firm feel. My firsthand Streamline Firm and Preferred Luxe 2 Firm references delivered more cushioning than their Firm names might suggest.

I would put Purple on your shortlist when you genuinely enjoy its distinctive Grid response. My tested RestorePremier Soft relieved pressure without producing memory-foam-style immersion; RestorePremier Firm had a cushion-firm character. The tested Restore Hybrid Firm was buoyant and easy to move on, but its firmer surface gave me less shoulder relief.

Before comparing price tags, try the Grid. If you dislike that sensation, moving up the Purple range is not automatically the solution. If you love it, an expensive upholstered mattress may still be the less satisfying choice.

Use my Mattress Consultation to choose a useful starting pair. Tell me about yourself and I’ll narrow down 100+ mattresses to the few I’d actually put you on.

The tested models and current models need separate labels

My Aireloom field notes concern Streamline Firm and Preferred Luxe 2 Firm. My Purple references include RestorePremier Soft, RestorePremier Firm, and Restore Hybrid Firm. Those names identify the actual mattresses behind the observations below.

Current catalogs need a separate check. Aireloom lists models such as Streamline Luxury Firm and Luxetop M2 Luxury Firm. Purple's current Restore pages describe configurations that do not simply reproduce every Soft or Firm label in my earlier notes.

I am therefore using the tested beds as feel references, not claiming that an identically sounding mattress sold today has unchanged construction. Confirm the generation, comfort designation, and exact product before transferring any old review to a new purchase.

The firsthand evidence here consists of personal evaluations and recorded comfort impressions. It does not include a matched overnight cooling experiment, a medical study, or a long-term ownership comparison between these exact beds.

Numbers use Professor Goodsleep Real Firmness™, with higher values indicating firmer feel. They are not manufacturer scores or measurements of quality. I am intentionally not printing a firmness number for the tested Restore Hybrid Firm because its recorded numeric references need reconciliation.

Recorded scores: Aireloom Streamline Firm 5.0, Preferred Luxe 2 Firm 4.5; Purple RestorePremier Soft 4.0 and Firm 4.8.
Historical tested-reference subjective feel scores, not current-product specifications. Purple’s current lineup does not necessarily use these older Soft/Firm variants.

Professor Goodsleep’s Firsthand Field Notes

Aireloom Streamline Firm: more cushion than the name suggests

Streamline Firm is my 5.0 Aireloom reference. My recorded impression was substantial cushioning and lift over the firmer support unit. That is why I describe the tested mattress as cushion-firm rather than treating Firm as a promise of a hard surface.

This distinction helps two very different shoppers. Someone afraid of a Firm label might overlook a comfortable option. Someone seeking a flat, unyielding feel might buy it expecting less cushioning than it actually provides.

What appeals to me is the complete upholstered feel. I would still want a shopper to identify whether that cushioning solves a real comfort need before paying a luxury price for it.

Aireloom Preferred Luxe 2 Firm: support with a welcoming comfort package

Preferred Luxe 2 Firm is a 4.5 firsthand reference. My professional assessment is positive about its support, responsiveness, and build quality. Like Streamline Firm, it has enough cushioning and lift to belong in the cushion-firm discussion.

That opinion comes from my actual experience with the named mattress. It is not a statement that I performed a multi-year durability trial, and I am not assigning its score to the current Luxetop M2 Luxury Firm merely because the names seem related.

When you visit an Aireloom retailer, ask which specific model is the closest present-day candidate. Then evaluate that bed on its own merits.

Purple RestorePremier Soft and Firm: the response changes the meaning of softness

RestorePremier Soft is my 4.0 firsthand reference. The important observation was pressure relief without the deep memory-foam immersion some shoppers expect from the word Soft.

RestorePremier Firm is a 4.8 cushion-firm reference. I found the Grid could give at pressure points while limiting the sense of sinking deeply into the mattress. That makes it an interesting candidate for someone who already knows they like Purple's response.

Notice how close the numeric anchors can look to Aireloom's. A number does not capture the texture, the way cushioning engages, or what happens when you roll over. Two beds can occupy a similar firmness range and still feel distinctly different.

Purple Restore Hybrid Firm: movement was a strength, shoulder comfort a caution

On the Restore Hybrid Firm I evaluated, the buoyant, bouncy response made movement easy. My notes also describe strong back support and more noticeable movement transfer than dense memory foam.

The firmer surface offered limited shoulder relief in that evaluation. I would be careful about choosing this particular feel for someone whose main priority is generous side-sleeping cushioning.

I noticed a cooling-cover sensation during the initial showroom period. That is a short-term observation, not evidence that the mattress stays cooler than Aireloom throughout the night. These details belong to the tested configuration, including its cover, rather than every Purple sold under a related name.

Cushioning and the Grid answer different comfort questions

For an Aireloom shopper, I would ask: do you enjoy the feeling of a substantial comfort package above the support unit? My tested firm models show how a supportive mattress can still have a welcoming surface.

For a Purple shopper, I would ask: do you like the way this surface gives under you and responds when your weight shifts? The unusual response is central to the decision. It should feel appealing in your normal sleeping positions, not merely interesting when you press on a sample.

Try to describe the difference without using the words good or bad. You might prefer a more familiar upholstered cushion. You might like Purple's more distinctive interaction with your shoulders and hips. Either is a legitimate preference.

If you are actually seeking slow, close contouring, neither of these particular reference groups should be chosen just because it is labeled soft. Our Aireloom vs. Tempur-Pedic comparison explores that different comfort question.

Which would I investigate for your sleeping position?

Side sleepers: let the shoulder settle before deciding

For a side sleeper considering Purple, my RestorePremier Soft experience is a more promising reference than my Restore Hybrid Firm experience. The latter's shoulder-relief limitation is exactly the kind of detail a general brand rating can hide.

That does not make the current RestorePremier an automatic match. Identify the present configuration, then spend time on your side. Notice whether the shoulder becomes comfortable or whether you keep shifting to find a tolerable spot.

With Aireloom, substantial cushioning is encouraging, but the tested Firm models should not be assumed soft enough for every side sleeper. A lighter person may engage the surface differently from someone with broader shoulders or more weight concentrated at the hips.

Back sleepers: support should feel comfortable across the torso

The tested Aireloom firm references and Purple RestorePremier Firm are reasonable comfort references to explore when you prefer cushion-firm support. Restore Hybrid Firm also belongs in the discussion for someone who likes a firmer, buoyant response.

I would pay attention to whether you can relax rather than to how forcefully the mattress announces its support. A firm surface that feels stable and comfortable can be useful. A concentrated push that makes you reposition is a reason to compare another option.

Stomach and combination sleepers: check settling and turning separately

A stomach sleeper should examine how far the middle settles into either comfort system. An Aireloom Firm label does not erase its generous cushioning, and a Purple support story does not replace a personal fit check.

Combination sleepers have a specific reason to investigate the Purple response: easy movement was a strength of my tested Restore Hybrid Firm. Still, mobility should not be purchased at the expense of shoulder comfort when part of the night is spent on your side.

I would compare Aireloom's comfort and response with the exact Purple configuration you can try, rather than choosing whichever springs back fastest under your hand. My Mattress Consultation can narrow that comfort tradeoff around your build, sleeping positions, and partner's needs.

Cooling and motion: useful observations, limited winners

Purple's open Grid design attracts shoppers who sleep warm. Aireloom promotes materials and construction intended to manage temperature. Those design descriptions can guide questions, but they do not give me a matched overnight winner between these particular mattresses.

My brief cooling-cover impression on Restore Hybrid Firm should stay exactly that: a showroom impression. The cover on a current model may differ, and your protector and bedding will become part of the surface you actually sleep on.

Motion transfer deserves equal care. I found the tested Restore Hybrid Firm lively compared with dense memory foam. That observation does not prove every Aireloom transfers less movement or every Purple feels equally bouncy.

If partner disturbance is important, have one person remain still while the other turns naturally, sits down, and gets out of bed. Repeat the same movements on both finalists. A responsive feel you enjoy while moving can produce movement your partner dislikes.

For edges, check lying near the side and sitting with your feet on the floor. They are different uses. I have not established a controlled edge-support winner here, so I would let that practical trial carry more weight than the name of an edge system.

What the current construction pages actually establish

Aireloom's current Streamline Luxury Firm page lists natural latex, foam, cotton, and individually wrapped coils. Its Luxetop M2 Luxury Firm page adds dual microcoil layers within a more elaborate comfort package. Both are current construction examples, separate from my older named test references.

The current Purple Restore page describes a Grid-and-coil mattress and distinguishes Restore, RestorePlus, and RestorePremier constructions. Do not transplant the layer specifications or feel of today's version onto a previous-generation Soft or Firm sample.

Aireloom also notes that model names and fabric colors can vary by retailer. Get the written specification for the exact bed you are considering instead of trying to match it solely by upholstery color or a similar name.

More components are not automatically more useful comfort. A microcoil layer, latex layer, or Grid design is valuable when the finished mattress works better for you. Construction tells us what to investigate; your fit determines whether the result deserves the price.

Craftsmanship, durability, and what a showroom cannot prove

My professional opinion of the tested Aireloom Preferred Luxe 2 Firm's build is strong. That is a reason to take it seriously, not a license to promise a fixed comfort life.

Likewise, an unusual material is not proof that a Purple will remain comfortable longer or shorter than a particular Aireloom. I would not substitute stories about old Purple models for evidence about the current bed you are buying.

Inspect practical details: how the mattress is supported, whether the required base matches what you own, and what care the manufacturer requires. Read the warranty for its actual coverage rather than translating its length into guaranteed years of comfortable sleep.

When two beds fit equally well, construction and your confidence in the purchase can help break a tie. They should not talk you into a mattress you already find uncomfortable.

Value: make the upgrade explain itself

Start by getting complete quotes for two realistic finalists. Keep the size, required base, delivery services, and any removal service consistent. Different model tiers can change the price relationship, so I would not declare one brand universally cheaper.

If Aireloom costs more in your comparison, ask what you are receiving that you can actually feel or specifically value. Better shoulder comfort, a preferred upholstered response, or an easier time finding the right support can be meaningful. A more impressive collection name is a weaker reason.

If Purple costs less but you keep noticing a sensation you dislike, that is not a bargain for you. Conversely, a comfortable Purple does not become inferior because another bed has more elaborate upholstery.

Check the seller's return and exchange terms before paying. Ask whether you can receive a refund, whether you are limited to an exchange, and what charges or conditions apply. A retailer's promise needs to be in writing; do not assume all sellers use a manufacturer's direct-purchase terms.

For another luxury-value reference, Beautyrest Black vs. Aireloom can help broaden the shortlist without making it endless.

Professor Goodsleep’s final verdict

Aireloom is the direction I would explore for someone who wants substantial upholstered cushioning and appreciates the lifted, cushion-firm feel in my Streamline Firm and Preferred Luxe 2 Firm notes.

Purple is the direction I would explore for someone who already enjoys the Grid and wants to select the right version of that response. My RestorePremier references show why the labels deserve interpretation; my Restore Hybrid Firm experience shows why mobility and shoulder comfort must be weighed together.

Try the feel first, verify the exact current model second, and judge the complete purchase third. If you want a shorter list before heading out, start my Mattress Consultation for a more personal match. A clear comfort preference will do more for this decision than another generic brand ranking.
