Passive Cooling Technologies
Passive cooling relies on breathable materials that allow air to flow freely through the mattress. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses are naturally the coolest options because the coil layer creates large air channels. Latex is also naturally temperature-neutral, neither absorbing nor retaining heat the way foam does.

Active cooling technologies go beyond breathability to actively draw heat away from the body. Phase Change Material (PCM) is one of the most effective. PCM is a substance that absorbs heat as it transitions from solid to liquid at a specific temperature, effectively pulling excess heat away from your body and storing it. Both materials are highly thermally conductive, meaning they pull heat away from the body and disperse it through the foam layer rather than allowing it to build up at the surface. I would put these in the help you fall asleep category, not really keeping you cool throughout the night if you are a "hot" sleeper.
Best Mattress Types for Hot Sleepers
If you sleep hot, your best options are: a hybrid mattress with a breathable coil base and a cooling foam or latex comfort layer, a latex mattress, or an innerspring mattress. If you are committed to memory foam, ensure it has a PCM-infused cover, gel infusions throughout the foam layers, and an open-cell foam structure. Look for up to 5-10 degrees they state the mattress can reduce your body temperature by.
Room temperature also matters. Sleep experts recommend keeping your bedroom between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. No mattress technology can fully compensate for a hot room.
